Cadiz traces its beginnings to the establishment of a traditional settlement in a place known as Cadiz Viejo, near the banks of Hitalon River. Historical records showed that in 1861, the Spaniards came and named the settlement Cadiz because of its northern location which reminded them of the seaport by the same name in Spain.

Cadiz became a municipality independent from Saravia (now E.B Magalona) in 1878. Its first appointed Gobernadorcillo was Antonio Cabahug, married to Capitana Francisca Cito.

The outbreak of the Spanish-American War saw Cadiz taking part in the insurrection. Her sons and daughters headed by Francisco Abelarde, took up arms against their Spanish masters.

During the short-lived government of the cantonal state of the Federal Republica de Negros, Jose Lopez Vito was elected its president.

At the onset of American rule, Cadiz was on its way to prosperity with the operation of two lumber companies in the area. The war years brought a stop to all these economic activities and much suffering to the people of Cadiz.

The resistance movement put up the civil government in the mountains to deal with civilian affairs. In the post-war election of 1952, Joaquin Ledesma was elected mayor.

ImageOn July 1967, Cadiz was inaugurated as a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 4894 which was passed by Congress on June 17, 1967. The Act was authored by the late Congressman Armando Gustilo.

How to get there

Cadiz City is a 45-minute drive north of Bacolod City by private car. Public utility vehicles reach the place in less than 90 minutes. Other north bound buses are also required to make stopover at the city terminal which is more than a kilometer away from the highway. Four hours-and-a-half away from Cebu by land, Cadiz serves as a spring board to Cebu and from there to Eastern Visayas and Mindanao.

Location

Cadiz City is bounded on north by the Visayas Sea, on the south by Silay City, on the west by Manapla and on the east by the City of Sagay.

Famous Landmarks

ImageWW II Memorial Wall is a monument who figured prominently in the liberation of Negros from the Japanese Imperial Forces.

A memorial wall that serves as a sidewall to the Cadiz City Public Plaza, it is a tribute to all war veterans who fought against the invaders during the World War II. An enormous list of heroes is emblazoned/ embossed onto the 10-feet-tall wall.

Lakawon Island Resort-Negros Occidental is a white sand island paradise amid clear blue waters. The resort has a magnificent view of the sunset. It is a peaceful haven that offers diving, surfing and jet skiing.

Laura’s Seafront Beach Resort. This seafront beach resort prides itself with its magnificent Olympic-size swimming pool. It’s ideal for night swimming and family outing. Its stylish and neat beach houses and cottages add charm to its already-stunning view.

Cornel Swimming Pool in Brgy. Cabahug os 13 kilometers from the city proper, it can be reach within 15 minutes. It offers swimming lessons and is venue of swimming competitions. The pool is open to public on Wednesday through Sunday. 13 kilometers away from the City proper, it also offers swimming and horseback riding lessons, and accepts wedding occasion, seminars and other parties. Travel time runs about 15 minutes from the City. Entrance fee is P30.00/ person (adult/ children)

Busac-Busac Spring in Brgy. Tinampa-an is the main source of potable water in the city. Sprouting out of the toe of a hill and adorned by surrounding boulders that transform it into an epitome of natural beauty and environmental attraction, Busac-Busac spring’s water is as clear as crystal and anybody can feel its freshness that continuously flows out from its sharp, narrow mouth.

Now a great source of potable water for the Cadiz City Water District, the spring which is 9.5 kilometers away from the city proper, is situated in Hda. Reboton, Barangay Tinampaan. One can get there in about 30 minutes via jeepney or tricycle.

Hda. Buen Pastor Cutflower/ Pineapple Plantation
It’s the City’s agri-tourism potential, with exotic variety of cutflowers and hybrid pineapple. Located in Barangay Jerusalem, it is about 30 to 45 minutes from the city proper.

Faraon Garden flaunts the elegance and beauty of vibrant garden in a natural landscape. It’s an eco-tourism potential that has blooming flowers and budding trees of various rare species.

Tamsi Shrine is situated in Hda. Tamsi, Barangay Tinampaan. The shrine is nestled amid elegant garden of flowers with several life size statues of saints.

Pacol Waterfalls is a spectacular waterfalls that protrudes alongside the forest. Fresh and cool spring water engulfs huge boulders. Set in the mountain of Alimatoc, the place is a fresh new way of experiencing the remarkable gift of nature.

Alimatoc Rice Terraces. Cadiz prides itself in its local rice terraces in Alimatoc. It is artistically, uniquely and beautifully cultivated by the farmers.

Balay Alibangbang is the first live butterfly sanctuary in the province. Located in Hacienda Tagud, the place is ideal for seminars and family outings.

Festival
Dinagsa Festival is the highlight of a weeklong celebration in honor of its Patron saint, the Señor Sto. Niño. Held every last week of January, this spectacular revelry features “Ati tribes garbed in their colorful costumes dancing to the fast and defeaning beat of drums while carrying the image of the holy child Jesus.
