Guv’s funeral set Monday; omit flowers
Mar 15th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Negros NewsBacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra yesterday called on Negrenses to offer prayers for the repose of the soul of Gov. Joseph Marañon and for the comfort of his bereaved family. Marañon died Thursday night after he succumbed to cardio pulmonary arrest, six days before his 74th birthday.
Marañon’s remains will be brought to the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City at 8:30 a.m. today and Navarra will lead a concelebrated mass at 9 a.m.
Another mass will be held at 6 p.m. today to be celebrated by Msgr. Guillermo Gaston.
At 9 a.m. Sunday the remains of the governor will be transferred to the St. Joseph the Worker Church in Sagay City and he will be buried after a 9 a.m. mass on Monday.
Our family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of love, sympathy, condolences and support, the governor’s sister Sonia Sarrosa said.
We would like to ask everyone to please honor the wishes of the family and the governor to omit flowers and instead send love gifts or donations to the Carmel of Bacolod, the University of St. La Salle Bahay Paga-asa in Bacolod City or the Donodella Providenza Home Inc., an orphanage in Pontevedra town, she said.
Flowers will just wither after a few days, but the money channeled to these institutions could be used to feed, educate and cloth orphans, help in the rehabilitation of youth at risk, and be used for the upkeep of the Carmelite Monastery, she said.
Sarrosa issued the appeal as flowers yesterday morning continued to arrive at the wake of the governor at the Carmelite Monastery.
“The guv was a man of very simple taste, he did not want any fuss, he just wanted a simple burial,” she said.
The governor also said he did not want any necrological speeches at his wake.*CPG
