Another call center to open in Bacolod, to hire 3,000

Transcom Asia, a call center company based in Europe, will start operating in Bacolod City in September 2009 with 800 personnel, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said yesterday.
Leonardia said the call center, which will be located at Lopue’s South Square in Brgy. Tangub, targets to hire 2,000 to 3,000 employees.
Leonardia, with Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, met with Transcom Asia country manager Seva Subramaniam last week on the details for the opening of Transcom Asia in Bacolod.
The city officials were elated at the latest development in the Business Process Outsourcing industry in the city, saying it is an indication that call center companies are recognizing the capabilities of Bacoleños.
Leonardia said the passing rate of call center applicants in Bacolod is higher than that in Metro Manila.
“That further confirms the previous impression that, in Bacolod, the quality of our call center prospective employees are quite high and that must be the reason why the call centers come to Bacolod,” he said.
Leonardia said they told Subramaniam that they are welcome in Bacolod and also assured him of the full support of the city government for Transcom Asia in terms of quality manpower and security.
This includes extending the lighting facilities up to South Square where their site is located, he said.
They are also installing additional lighting facilities in front of TeleTech and Teleperformance because they want to support the call center industry for it to grow in Bacolod, he added.
Leonardia said he has instructed Permits and Licensing head Ardis Jaculina to finalize the education program of the Bacolod Investment Board to (provide crash course) improve the quality of prospective applicants for the call centers.
Based on their queries, call center agents earn a minimum of P10,000 to 15,000 a month, he said.
The Regional Development Council reported that the number of employees in the call center industry in Bacolod is estimated to be more than 4,000, Leonardia said.
He said they were told by Transcom Asia that one of their thrusts is to encourage Bacoleños working in call centers in other places, to work in Bacolod.
“As much as possible we want our people to work here so they will not be separated from their families and at the same time, their income will circulate in Bacolod,” he added.
Meanwhile, a resolution endorsing as an information technology zone the property located at Lopue’s South Square in Brgy. Tangub, Bacolod City, to be known as Transcom Center Bacolod, was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod last week.
Batapa-Sigue, who authored the resolution, said the TCB is the 14h Philippine Economic Zone Authority-accredited site in Bacolod.
Once presidentialy-proclaimed, it will be the eight IT economic zone in the city, she said.*CGS
